City soars with new sculpture exhibit during Choc Fest

Kites Over Vista Sculpture Exhibit Takes Flight May 25

Eight artists will unveil their visions of “kites” for a new sculpture exhibit to be showcased downtown and debuting during the Chocolate Festival.  The sculptures were selected through a juried competition and will be on display for a period of 12 months.  The exhibit will take flight May 25 at 10 a.m. with several kite-orientated activities for attendees including a Kite Parade in conjunction with the Vista Village Chocolate Festival.

Winning artists include Melissa Ralston, Escondido, with “Tail Spin;” Christie Beniston, Solana Beach, “Kinetic Box Kite;” Lori Escalera and Christy Berberet, Vista, “L’onda di Tessera;” Robert Rochin, Vista, “The Big Blue Kite;” Robert Maya, Encinitas, “Family Flying Fun;” Buddy Smith, Vista, “Which Direction?;” Josh Bowman, Vista,  “Joy Figure;” and Charles Bronson, Vista, creating “Sea Breeze.”

The City will provide artists with a six-inch diameter, 12 foot steel pole and a square concrete planter as a base to their creations.  Winning artists will be compensated with a design fee of $750.  During the exhibit period, the sculpture will remain property of the artist and can be sold or removed after the loan period.

The purpose of the Public Arts Commission is to promote and support the public display and public appreciation of art in the City of Vista. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Finance Conference Room at City Hall.  For more information about the Kites Over Vista sculpture exhibit or the Public Arts Commission, please contact Bill Fortmueller at 760.726.1340 ext.1148 or send an email to bfortmueller@cityofvista.com.
